Up close with Chimpanzees
It was time for another wildlife encounter. This time we went to the Nyungwe National Park to spot chimpanzees in the jungle. The national park itself is already beautiful but spotting chimpanzees up in the trees definitely tops it off. We got up really early in the morning – I am talking 4AM here – to meet our guide at the visitor centre and then drove to the starting point. The drive included another African massage of course, but like always it was completely worth it. Once equipped with sticks and porters we started the hike. Only after a few meters we were called by the chimpanzee trackers though who informed us that the animals had changed their position so we went back to the car and drove to a different starting point. This time the trackers were sure about the location and after a short hike we have reached the first spot. Two chimpanzees were just above us in the tree. They were eating, cleaning themselves and the baby was playing around just like a human kid would. We spend some time watching them, got to use the guide’s binoculars and just enjoyed the moment. After that we continued and after a few minutes we spotted another group who was about to leave ‘their’ tree behind and the chimpanzees disappeared in the forest. The hike back to the car was shorter but steeper but after a little snack break we were all fine. On the way back to Kigali we stopped at a beautiful spot for lunch and we were all still very impressed by the previous chimpanzee encounter. The chimpanzees are definitely a highlight and the trip another great opportunity to relax, discover and get connected.
